World Biodiversity Day
22 May
The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) - informally called the World Biodiversity Day - to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

2026
This year, the World Biodiversity Day focuses on
"Taking Action for Nature"

This year's theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22) focuses on accelerating the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), emphasizing "taking action for nature" and reversing biodiversity loss. The theme aligns with Target 17 and global efforts to protect humanity's "life-support system".

Key focus areas for 2026 include:

  • Implementing the KMGBF: Driving progress on the 23 targets set in the framework, with a focus on the 2030 goals.
  • Action-Oriented Approach: The theme highlights the need for immediate, concrete actions from all sectors of society to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
  • Target 17 and Beyond: Specific attention to promoting biodiversity education, awareness, and mainstreaming actions to ensure sustainable, long-term conservation.
The campaign is closely tied to the upcoming 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 17), which will review the progress of the GBF implementation.

GDRC has been working on themes related to this international day/observance, in its programme on Sustainable Development

GDRC therefore reaffirms its committment to uphold the objectives of the International Biological Diversity Day, and work towards better understanding of, and action on, promoting the role of biodiversity in sustainable development.
